Dr. Michael A. Pezzone, M.D., Ph.D., is a national and international expert in functional bowel disorders including irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and other disorders of motility and visceral pain. He received his Ph.D. studying the brain pathways that are activated by stress and how they affect the immune system. His post-graduate research expertise lies in the study of visceral pain pathways and their sensitization by chemical mediators, some of which are released by immune cells. He has received national and international attention for his studies. Dr. Pezzone is a local expert in celiac disease and other allergic and/or inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and a regular lecturer for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where he has lectured on the "Physiology and Treatment of Acid-Related Disorders and Peptic Ulcer Disease", "Constipation: Evaluation and Management", "Pro-kinetics and Anti-emetics", "Colon Physiology and Motility", "Colon Pathophysiology" (including fecal incontinence), "Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Overlapping Chronic Pelvic Pain Conditions", and "The Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome". Dr. Pezzone is available for scientific consulting, experimental design, clinical trials, medical device development, lectures, testing of pharmaceuticals for visceral pain and motility, and legal consulting. Dr. Pezzone treats all forms of intestinal and liver disease and has been recognized as a Top Doctor in Gastroenterology throughout his clinical career and in multiple states.
